Is Ron Paul a Libertarian?

The question “is Ron Paul a Libertarian” begs the question, since probably most who are debating the issue really haven’t agreed on the definition of “what is a libertarian?”. The problem is a philosophical question and since everyone is different, that philosophical question has a multitude of answers and shades of interpretation.

“In contemporary politics, and, indeed, contemporary life, it is not at all uncommon to hear partisans speak of the “philosophical” differences between themselves and their opponents. Few people, though, really understand what philosophy is. This is no criticism; even those of us who make our living as philosophers have not infrequently found ourselves divided as to the character of our craft.

However, whatever our differences, one thing seems certain: that two (or more) people disagree over any given policy or set of policies might indicate that they are philosophically at odds with one another; it does not entail this.” (SOURCE)

I happen to be a registered Libertarian, however there are certain things about the Libertarian Party that I disagree, while still finding them much more relevant to freedom, ethics, inalienable rights and the Constitution. I view the two party system as the two sides of the same evil coin.

It infuriates me that in order to vote for Ron Paul in the primaries that I have to change my political registration to Republican. Even if is for just a few months to cover that polling period, it is repugnant to have to associate myself with either of the bloated two Constitution destroyers.

Back to the question, “is Ron Paul a libertarian?” YES, but in Republican clothing. Since Ron Paul ran as a Libertarian candidate in 1988 and found that is virtually impossible to hurdle all the roadblocks for third parties and still have energy and capital left to compete in the election, he elected to swallow the bitter pill of ‘Republican’ to get into the political arena.

Even as a Republican candidate you can see that he does not have the backing of the mainstream Republican party or the mainstream media, that marginalizes his presence as much as possible. Even so when he does get the podium he resonates with many and the country has had it with the status quo that has put us into this financial fiasco.

  1. Off Topic, but Dick Morris bumped into Mitt Romney at a hotel over breakfast. Had a half hour chat with him and was very impressed. Here’s the video…
